Techies of National Public School Indiranagar break language barriers through coding

A hundred-odd coders from various colleges and companies and a team from NPS Indiranagar, gathered on Saturday, 18 January 2020 for a hackathon organised by Nasscom and Reverie Language Technologies. The hackathon’s agenda was breaking the language barrier through coding. Our team, comprising Anirudh S, Abhinav Chinta, Anand Balivada, Vrishab Krishna and Luv Singhal of Class 11, has developed a software called ‘Drishti’, that translates books in English or Hindi to books in braille of Indian languages, targeted towards publishers of braille books. Our team, which was also the youngest team at the event, won the hackathon and bagged prize money of Rs 1 lakh.

Drishti can be extended to any Indian language, as Bharati Braille (unlike Latin braille) is based on sounds or phonetics and not on the alphabet. The software has incorporated all sounds from many Indian languages. Every sound corresponds to the arrangement of dots. Braille was chosen as it was one of the neglected written forms of language in the country.

Everyone is equal in the eyes of law. However if you ever find yourself on the wrong side of it and need a lawyer look no further than our exceptional team of Aayush Gupta and Tarun Ashok who successfully outlawed everyone else and placed first in Corpus Juris, the law event.

It takes great skill to buy players but even more skill to win without players that you wanted to buy. Harsh Sood and Vedant R are prime examples of this as, despite losing Messi in the auction they didn't give up and went on to strike first place in the gaming event.

Kanna: A Novel Method to Detect Amblyopia

Kanna is pre-screening tool developed by Viswesh Krishna of Class 12 and Vrishab Krishna of Class 10 to detect amblyopia in children. Amblyopia is an eye disorder which causes an eye to slowly deteriorate leading to blindness. It is a world-wide issue affecting more than a 100 million children all across the world with 16 million cases in India alone. Detecting amblyopia in children is crucial as it can be cured only if detected before the age of eight.

Viswesh and Vrishab have developed a screening tool that can effectively detect amblyopia using just images from a smartphone. Through machine learning algorithms which incorporate artificial intelligence, they have made the screening process incredibly efficient. Kanna was showcased at the Confederation of Indian Industries – India Innovation Summit, a nationwide event based on the impact of future technologies. Kanna is currently being tested at the Sankara Eye Hospital in association with Dr. Kaushik Murali and his team.

They have also presented their project at the IRIS National Fair on 2nd – 4th December 2018 in Delhi, India’s largest research-based science fair for students. They won a Grand Award at the fair and will now represent India at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF).
