The “International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO)” tests the abilities of the students in different disciplines such as geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, astronomy and environmental science. The competition consists of both theoretical and practical exams.
IESO is held every year in a different country and this year, it was held in Japan from AUG 20 to 27, 2016. Student winners of the respective national competitions of different countries were invited to participate in the IESO.
The Indian team comprising of 4 students represented India in IESO 2016. Guhan Narayanan, Class 12 Student of National Public School Indiranagar, was one of the proud participants.
Guhan won a Silver Medal in the competition and so did 2 other participants from India. In addition, Guhan won a Silver Medal for the Earth Science Project – that was to be done as a team (in which he was a member) comprising of participants from different countries.
The "Geological Society of India" is the agency responsible for selecting the Indian Team for IESO and is supported by the Ministry of Earth Science (MoES), Government of India, as part of its outreach program for the promotion of Earth Science.
Also, Guhan was invited by the Minister of Science,Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, to be felicitated.
